2 Day San Francisco Itinerary

Two full days, split so you’re not backtracking, with the icons on day one and the neighbourhoods on day two.

Two days in San Francisco is enough to properly cover Alcatraz and the waterfront and still get out to the park and the neighbourhoods. Here’s how I’d split it, day by day.

Day 01

The Icons & the Waterfront

Start with Alcatraz first thing, then Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 for the sea lions and a bread bowl lunch. Ride the Powell-Hyde cable car up to Lombard Street, then walk North Beach for espresso and a climb up Coit Tower.

End the day at Crissy Field or Battery Spencer for the Golden Gate Bridge at sunset, then dinner in North Beach or a rideshare into the Mission for something more affordable.

Morning Alcatraz Island
Afternoon Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39, Lombard Street, North Beach
Evening Golden Gate Bridge at sunset, dinner
“Book Alcatraz the moment your dates are confirmed, genuinely. This is the single ticket most likely to sell out, sometimes weeks ahead in peak season.”
Day 02

Golden Gate Park & the Neighbourhoods

Spend the morning in Golden Gate Park, the Japanese Tea Garden and the de Young Museum both worth the time, then walk or bike toward the Haight-Ashbury for a look at the birthplace of the Summer of Love. The Painted Ladies at Alamo Square sit a short trip away too, one of the most photographed rows of houses in the city.

Spend the afternoon wandering the Mission District’s murals and taquerias, then head up to Twin Peaks for sunset views over the whole city, genuinely one of the best free viewpoints in San Francisco.

Getting around across both days

San Francisco is genuinely walkable in sections but the hills add up fast, cable cars and Muni cover the rest efficiently. A Muni Passport is worth it if you’re relying on public transport across both days, and rideshares fill in anywhere the cable car lines don’t reach.

If you only have time for one thing each day

Day one, make it Alcatraz, genuinely the single attraction most worth planning the whole day around. Day two, make it Golden Gate Park, considerably bigger than most visitors expect and easy to spend a full morning exploring on its own.

That’s everything I’ve got.

A note before you plan around this: prices, opening hours, booking requirements and admission details in this guide were correct at the time of writing, but venues change these often and sometimes without notice. Always check directly with the attraction or its official website before you travel or build a schedule around a specific time or price.

Before travelling to any destination featured on this site, please also check your government’s latest travel advice, as safety situations, entry requirements and travel warnings can change.
