24 Hours in San Francisco

One day, the icons, the hills and the bay, hour by hour, ending with sunset over the Golden Gate Bridge.

Twenty-four hours in San Francisco means booking Alcatraz first and building the rest of the day around it, this order gets you the island, the Wharf, a cable car and the bridge without wasting time backtracking. Here’s the full plan, hour by hour.

8:00am

Coffee and the Ferry Building

Start at the Ferry Building Marketplace along the Embarcadero, a genuinely great spot for coffee and a pastry before the day gets going. Browse the food hall’s local vendors, cheese, bread and produce, then walk the waterfront for early views over the Bay.

9:30am

Alcatraz Island

Book the Alcatraz ferry ahead, tickets sell out days in advance, and the crossing alone gives sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the city skyline. The self-guided audio tour through the old cell blocks runs about 45 minutes, and the whole visit takes 2.5-3 hours including the boat.

1:00pm

Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39

Back on land, walk to Pier 39 for the sea lions at K-Dock, one of the city’s most reliably entertaining free sights, then grab clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl for lunch. Ghirardelli Square sits a short walk further along the waterfront if chocolate’s calling.

2:30pm

A cable car up to Lombard Street

Hop the Powell-Hyde cable car line, the last manually operated system of its kind in the world, and ride it up toward Russian Hill. Get off for Lombard Street, the famously crooked block with eight switchback turns, well worth the short detour for the view down the hill.

4:00pm

North Beach and Coit Tower

Walk into North Beach, the city’s Little Italy, for espresso and focaccia, then climb Telegraph Hill to Coit Tower for one of the best panoramic views in San Francisco. The murals inside the tower’s base are worth a look too if you’ve got a few extra minutes.

6:00pm

Golden Gate Bridge at sunset

Head to Crissy Field or Battery Spencer for the classic Golden Gate Bridge photo, the light turns properly spectacular as the sun drops behind the towers. Walking or biking partway across the bridge itself adds a proper close-up view if you’ve got the energy left.

7:30pm

Dinner in the Mission or North Beach

End the day with dinner in the Mission District, genuinely some of the city’s best and most affordable food, or head back to North Beach for classic Italian if you’d rather stay near the waterfront. Either way, a proper full day in the City by the Bay.

That’s everything I’ve got.
