2 Day Cambridge Itinerary

Two full days, split so you’re not backtracking, with the colleges and the river on day one and the museums and countryside on day two.

Two days in Cambridge is enough to properly cover the colleges and still get out to Grantchester for a taste of the surrounding countryside. Here’s how I’d split it, day by day.

Day 01

The Colleges & the River

Start early at King’s Parade before the crowds, then King’s College Chapel, Trinity College and the Wren Library, timing the latter for its short lunchtime opening hours. Walk to the Corpus Clock and the Round Church, then lunch at the Market Square.

Spend the afternoon punting along the Backs, past the college gardens and beneath the Mathematical Bridge, then finish with Evensong at King’s College Chapel if you’re visiting during term time.

Morning King’s Parade, King’s College Chapel, Trinity College, the Wren Library
Afternoon The Corpus Clock, lunch, punting on the Cam
Evening Evensong at King’s College Chapel, dinner at a historic pub
“Time the Wren Library carefully, genuinely. It’s only open roughly 12-2pm on weekdays, and it’s the one thing on this list you can’t simply turn up to whenever suits.”
Day 02

The Museums & the Countryside

Spend the morning at the Fitzwilliam Museum, free entry to Egyptian antiquities and a proper Old Masters collection, then the University Botanic Garden, 40 acres and over 8,000 plant species just a short walk from the train station.

In the afternoon, cycle or walk out to Grantchester, the picturesque village upriver made famous by Rupert Brooke, for tea in the Orchard Tea Garden. Come back into the city for a final evening browsing the bookshops and market stalls.

Morning The Fitzwilliam Museum, the Botanic Garden
Afternoon Grantchester and the Orchard Tea Garden
Evening Bookshops and the market

Getting around across both days

Cambridge is genuinely flat and entirely walkable, most sights sit within a comfortable stroll of the centre. Bike hire is worth it for the Grantchester trip specifically, Rutland Cycling at the train station rents both standard and electric bikes by the hour.

If you only have time for one thing each day

Day one, make it a punt along the Backs, genuinely the single best way to see the colleges from an angle most visitors never get. Day two, make it Grantchester, a proper slice of English countryside a stone’s throw from the city centre.

That’s everything I’ve got.
