2 Day Venice Itinerary
Two full days, split so you’re not backtracking, with the main city on day one and the colourful islands on day two.
Two days in Venice is enough to properly cover the main city and still get out to the islands. Here’s how I’d split it, day by day.
The Icons & the Grand Canal
Start early at St. Mark’s Square before the day-trippers arrive, then the Basilica, the Campanile and the Doge’s Palace. Walk to the Rialto Bridge for lunch and a browse of the market, then spend the afternoon in Dorsoduro’s quieter streets and galleries.
End the day with a gondola ride along the Grand Canal at golden hour, then dinner away from San Marco’s tourist prices, Dorsoduro or Cannaregio both offer considerably better value.
Afternoon The Rialto Bridge and Market, Dorsoduro
Evening A gondola ride, dinner in Dorsoduro or Cannaregio
The Islands & the Quieter Corners
Take the vaporetto out to Murano for its centuries-old glassmaking tradition, then Burano for its famously colourful houses and lace-making history. Both islands offer a genuine change of pace from the main city, considerably fewer crowds and a slower rhythm.
Back in Venice, spend the evening in Cannaregio, the Jewish Ghetto and its quiet canals rewarding unhurried wandering, before a final walk along the Zattere promenade as the sun goes down over the Giudecca Canal.
Afternoon Burano’s colourful houses and lace
Evening Cannaregio, sunset at the Zattere
Getting around across both days
Venice is entirely car-free and best explored on foot, though the vaporetto, the city’s water bus, is essential for reaching Murano and Burano. A 24 or 48-hour vaporetto pass is worth it if you’re using the water buses more than a couple of times.
If you only have time for one thing each day
Day one, make it St. Mark’s Square at dawn, genuinely one of the only times you’ll see it without a crowd. Day two, make it Burano, its candy-coloured houses are unlike anywhere else in Italy and photograph beautifully regardless of the weather.
That’s everything I’ve got.
