2 Day San Diego Itinerary

Two full days, split so you’re not backtracking, with Balboa Park and downtown on day one and the coast on day two.

Two days in San Diego is enough to properly cover Balboa Park and the city’s naval history, and still get out to La Jolla for a proper taste of the coast. Here’s how I’d split it, day by day.

Day 01

Balboa Park & Downtown

Start at Balboa Park, allowing a proper morning for El Prado and one or two museums, the San Diego Zoo is worth its own separate day if you’re keen on it. Grab lunch nearby, then spend the afternoon at the USS Midway Museum on the Embarcadero.

Finish the day in the Gaslamp Quarter, dinner and a proper evening in San Diego’s historic entertainment district.

Morning Balboa Park, El Prado, a museum or two
Afternoon The USS Midway Museum, the Embarcadero
Evening Dinner in the Gaslamp Quarter
“Book USS Midway tickets ahead for a weekend visit, genuinely. It’s the most-visited naval ship museum in the country, and walk-up queues can eat a proper chunk of your afternoon.”
Day 02

The Coast

Spend the day in La Jolla, a genuinely striking coastal neighbourhood, the cliffs at La Jolla Cove offer some of the best views in the city, and the sea lions hauled out on the rocks below are a proper local spectacle. La Jolla Shores Beach is worth a walk or a kayak out to the sea caves if you’re up for it.

In the afternoon, head to Mount Soledad for a proper panoramic view over the whole county, then wind down with dinner back in La Jolla or downtown.

Morning La Jolla Cove, the sea lions
Afternoon La Jolla Shores, Mount Soledad
Evening Dinner in La Jolla or downtown

Getting around across both days

Downtown San Diego and Balboa Park are genuinely walkable, most of day one’s sights sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. A car or rideshare is worth it for La Jolla on day two, a proper drive up the coast from downtown.

If you only have time for one thing each day

Day one, make it Balboa Park, genuinely the single best introduction to the city’s culture and history. Day two, make it La Jolla Cove, a proper contrast to downtown and one of the most scenic stretches of coastline in Southern California.

That’s everything I’ve got.
