2 Day Washington DC Itinerary | Chase the Pigeon

2 Day Washington DC Itinerary

Two full days, split so you’re not backtracking, with the monuments on day one and the museums and Georgetown on day two.

Two days in Washington DC is enough to properly cover the National Mall and the Smithsonian, and still get out to Georgetown for a proper change of pace. Here’s how I’d split it, day by day.

Day 01

The Mall & the Monuments

Start at the Lincoln Memorial, then walk the National Mall east through the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial and the MLK Memorial along the Tidal Basin. Reserve a timed slot for the Washington Monument, then pick one Smithsonian museum for the afternoon.

Finish the day at the Capitol and the White House, viewing both from outside if you haven’t booked tours ahead, then dinner and the monuments lit up by night.

Morning Lincoln Memorial, the National Mall’s memorials
Afternoon Washington Monument, a Smithsonian museum
Evening The Capitol, the White House, monuments by night
“Book the Washington Monument and any Capitol tour weeks ahead, genuinely. Both sell out fast, particularly in spring and summer, and walk-up availability is never guaranteed.”
Day 02

Museums & Georgetown

Spend the morning at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, opened by Barack Obama, a genuinely powerful, important collection worth the timed entry reservation. The National Archives Museum, home to the original Declaration of Independence, offers a proper alternative if history is more your focus.

In the afternoon, head to Georgetown, cobblestone streets, boutique shops and the university campus rewarding an unhurried wander. M Street’s restaurants and bars close out the day well.

Morning National Museum of African American History and Culture, or the National Archives
Afternoon Georgetown
Evening Dinner and drinks on M Street

Getting around across both days

The Washington Metro, six colour-coded lines, is genuinely the easiest way to get into and around the city, a reusable SmartTrip card is worth it over single tickets. Capital Bikeshare offers a good, flexible alternative for shorter trips between neighbourhoods too.

If you only have time for one thing each day

Day one, make it the National Mall’s memorials, genuinely the single best orientation to the city’s history and layout at once. Day two, make it the National Museum of African American History and Culture, a properly significant museum that rewards the advance booking.

That’s everything I’ve got.

A note before you plan around this: prices, opening hours, booking requirements and admission details in this guide were correct at the time of writing, but venues change these often and sometimes without notice. Always check directly with the attraction or its official website before you travel or build a schedule around a specific time or price.

Before travelling to any destination featured on this site, please also check your government’s latest travel advice, as safety situations, entry requirements and travel warnings can change.
