2 Day Melbourne Itinerary

Two full days, split so you’re not backtracking, with Federation Square and the laneways on day one and a Great Ocean Road day trip on day two.

Two days in Melbourne is enough to properly cover the city’s laneway culture and cultural sights, and still get out to the coast for one of Australia’s great road trips. Here’s how I’d split it, day by day.

Day 01

Federation Square & The Laneways

Start at Federation Square, then wander into Hosier Lane, two minutes east, its murals repainted often enough that no two visits look the same. Spend the afternoon exploring Degraves Street and Centre Place, Melbourne’s laneway coffee culture at its most concentrated.

Finish the day at the MCG or a rooftop bar, both a proper way to close out a day steeped in Melbourne’s culture.

Morning Federation Square, Hosier Lane
Afternoon Degraves Street, Centre Place
Evening The MCG or a rooftop bar
“Book Great Ocean Road tours a day or two ahead in peak season, genuinely. Full-day tours from Melbourne fill up fast, especially in summer, and popular departure times sell out first.”
Day 02

The Great Ocean Road

Spend the day on a Great Ocean Road tour, one of Australia’s most celebrated coastal drives, the Twelve Apostles limestone stacks its dramatic centrepiece. A genuinely long day out, most tours run 10-12 hours round trip from Melbourne.

Finish the day back in the city with a relaxed dinner, capping off a day of dramatic coastal scenery.

Evening A relaxed dinner back in Melbourne

Getting around across both days

Central Melbourne is genuinely walkable on day one, Federation Square and the laneways all sit close together. Day two requires a car or a booked tour, the Great Ocean Road sits well outside the city.

If you only have time for one thing each day

Day one, make it the laneways, genuinely the single most distinctive experience the city offers. Day two, make it the Twelve Apostles, a proper contrast to the city and one of the most photographed coastlines in Australia.

That’s everything I’ve got.
