2 Day Athens Itinerary
Two full days, split so you’re not backtracking, with the ancient sites on day one and a proper island day trip on day two.
Two days in Athens is enough to properly cover the ancient sites, and still get out to the Saronic Gulf islands for a proper taste of the Greek coastline. Here’s how I’d split it, day by day.
The Ancient Sites
Start at the Acropolis right at opening, allowing a proper couple of hours for the site and the museum at the base. Walk into Plaka for lunch, then spend the afternoon at the Ancient Agora and Hadrian’s Library nearby.
Finish the day with dinner at a Plaka rooftop taverna, a floodlit Parthenon view worth timing the evening around.
Afternoon Plaka, the Ancient Agora, Hadrian’s Library
Evening Dinner with a floodlit Parthenon view
A Saronic Gulf Island
Take a ferry out to one of the Saronic Gulf islands, Hydra, Aegina or Poros all sit within a short crossing of Piraeus and make for a genuinely worthwhile day trip. Hydra, car-free with donkeys instead of taxis, is widely the most atmospheric choice, though Aegina’s pistachios and ancient temple ruins are worth the trip too.
Spend the day wandering the harbour town, swimming if the season allows, and having a proper seafood lunch before the ferry back to Piraeus in the evening.
Afternoon Swimming, a seafood lunch
Evening Ferry back to Piraeus, dinner in Athens
Getting around across both days
Central Athens is genuinely walkable, most of day one’s sights sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. Day two requires a ferry from Piraeus, reachable by metro from central Athens in about 30 minutes.
If you only have time for one thing each day
Day one, make it the Acropolis, genuinely the single most significant site in the city. Day two, make it Hydra, a proper contrast to the ancient sites and one of the most atmospheric islands within easy reach of Athens.
That’s everything I’ve got.
