2 Day Kyoto Itinerary
Two full days, split so you’re not backtracking, with Fushimi Inari and Gion on day one and Arashiyama and northern Kyoto on day two.
Two days in Kyoto is enough to properly cover the city’s iconic sights, and still take in a golden temple that most first-timers miss on a rushed trip. Here’s how I’d split it, day by day.
Fushimi Inari & Gion
Start early at Fushimi Inari Taisha, arriving right at opening to beat the crowds. Spend the afternoon at Kiyomizu-dera Temple and the surrounding Higashiyama district, its preserved streets making for a proper wander.
Finish the day in Gion, dinner along Hanamikoji or Pontocho Alley, both lined with restaurants and lantern-lit atmosphere.
Afternoon Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Higashiyama
Evening Dinner in Gion
Arashiyama & Northern Kyoto
Spend the morning at Arashiyama, the bamboo grove and Tenryu-ji Temple both worth the visit, then head to Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, a properly striking temple covered in gold leaf reflecting in its pond.
Finish the day with a relaxed evening, a traditional tea ceremony or a slow dinner rewards the day’s walking.
Afternoon Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion
Evening A tea ceremony or relaxed dinner
Getting around across both days
Kyoto’s train and bus network is genuinely efficient, though the sights on each day sit in different parts of the city. A day bus pass is worth considering, particularly for day two’s stops.
If you only have time for one thing each day
Day one, make it Fushimi Inari, genuinely the single most iconic sight in the city. Day two, make it Kinkaku-ji, a proper contrast to the torii gates and one of Japan’s most photographed temples.
That’s everything I’ve got.
