2 Day Berlin Itinerary
Two full days, split so you’re not backtracking, with the icons and museums on day one and the Wall and neighbourhoods on day two.
Two days in Berlin is enough to properly cover the Gate, Museum Island and the Cold War history, and still get out to the East Side Gallery and Prenzlauer Berg. Here’s how I’d split it, day by day.
The Gate & Museum Island
Start at the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag Dome, then the Holocaust Memorial and Potsdamer Platz for lunch. Walk to Checkpoint Charlie, then spend the afternoon on Museum Island, the Pergamon Museum’s ancient artefacts are worth prioritising.
Finish the day at Alexanderplatz, then dinner and a properly lively evening in Kreuzberg.
Afternoon The Holocaust Memorial, Checkpoint Charlie, Museum Island
Evening Alexanderplatz, dinner in Kreuzberg
The Wall & Prenzlauer Berg
Spend the morning at the East Side Gallery, a properly striking 1.3-kilometre stretch of the Berlin Wall covered in artwork from artists around the world after the fall. The Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Strasse offers a properly moving alternative or addition too, one of the best Cold War sights in the city.
In the afternoon, walk through Prenzlauer Berg, a genuinely charming, leafy neighbourhood with independent shops and cafes, Kollwitzplatz and Kastanienallee both worth a slow wander. Finish the day at Mauerpark if it’s a Sunday, the flea market and karaoke in the amphitheatre are a proper only-in-Berlin experience.
Afternoon Prenzlauer Berg
Evening Mauerpark, if a Sunday
Getting around across both days
Berlin’s U-Bahn and S-Bahn network is genuinely extensive and efficient, a day ticket is worth it over paying per journey if you’re covering ground across both days. Central Berlin between the major sights is walkable too, particularly the stretch from the Gate to Museum Island.
If you only have time for one thing each day
Day one, make it Museum Island, genuinely one of the best concentrations of world-class museums anywhere in Europe. Day two, make it the East Side Gallery, a proper piece of living history unlike anywhere else in the city.
That’s everything I’ve got.
