2 Day Portland Itinerary

Two full days, split so you’re not backtracking, with the city and Washington Park on day one and the Columbia River Gorge on day two.

Two days in Portland is enough to properly cover the city’s bookstores and food scene, and still get out to one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Pacific Northwest. Here’s how I’d split it, day by day.

Day 01

The City & Washington Park

Start at Powell’s City of Books, allowing a proper couple of hours to browse the nine colour-coded rooms. Grab lunch at a food cart pod nearby, then spend the afternoon at Washington Park, the Rose Garden and Japanese Garden both worth the visit.

Finish the day with dinner and a stop at Voodoo Doughnut, open around the clock.

Morning Powell’s City of Books, a food cart lunch
Afternoon Washington Park, the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden
Evening Dinner, Voodoo Doughnut
“Grab the colour-coded floor map right at Powell’s entrance, genuinely. The store is large enough to properly lose track of where you are, and the map saves a lot of backtracking.”
Day 02

The Columbia River Gorge

Spend the day at the Columbia River Gorge, a genuinely dramatic landscape roughly 30 minutes east of Portland, home to Multnomah Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in the country, and a proper network of hiking trails. A car or organised tour is required, the gorge sits well outside the city.

Stop at a few of the smaller waterfalls along the Historic Columbia River Highway on the way back if time allows, before returning to Portland for a final evening.

Morning Multnomah Falls, the Columbia River Gorge
Afternoon Smaller waterfalls along the Historic Highway
Evening Return to Portland for dinner

Getting around across both days

Downtown Portland is genuinely walkable, most of day one’s sights sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. Day two requires a car or organised tour, the Columbia River Gorge sits a proper drive from the city.

If you only have time for one thing each day

Day one, make it Powell’s City of Books, genuinely the single best introduction to the city’s identity. Day two, make it Multnomah Falls, a proper contrast to the city and one of the most iconic sights in the Pacific Northwest.

That’s everything I’ve got.
