2 Day Amsterdam Itinerary
Two full days, split so you’re not crossing the canal ring twice, with the centre and Jordaan on day one and the museums and De Pijp on day two.
Two days in Amsterdam is enough to properly see the big three, the Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, and still leave time for the canals and a genuinely local neighbourhood. Here’s how I’d split it, day by day.
The Centre & the Jordaan
Start at the Anne Frank House, booked well ahead, then walk into the Jordaan and the Nine Streets for canalside charm and boutique shopping. Spend the afternoon on the canal belt itself, a UNESCO World Heritage site, before an evening canal cruise timed for sunset, the best light of the whole day on the water.
Round out the night with dinner in the Jordaan, Moeders and its converted greenhouse setting is a genuine favourite, or a rijsttafel, Indonesian multi-course feast, if you’d rather something more filling after a long day of walking.
Midday The Nine Streets, the Jordaan
Afternoon The canal belt
Evening Sunset canal cruise, dinner in the Jordaan
Museumplein & De Pijp
Start at the Rijksmuseum, Rembrandt’s Night Watch and 800 years of Dutch history, then the Van Gogh Museum next door, book a timed slot ahead. Both sit right on Museumplein, easy to combine into one focused morning and early afternoon.
Spend the rest of the afternoon in De Pijp, Albert Cuyp Market for street food and people-watching, a properly multicultural corner of the city with a different pace to the canal belt. End the trip with dinner in De Pijp or back in the centre, and a last wander through Vondelpark if the weather’s on your side.
Afternoon The Van Gogh Museum, De Pijp, Albert Cuyp Market
Evening Dinner, a last walk through Vondelpark
Getting around across both days
Amsterdam’s centre is compact enough to walk most of it, and a bike rental gets you around the way locals actually do. An OV chipkaart covers trams and buses efficiently for longer hops, particularly useful getting out to Museumplein or De Pijp.
If you only have time for one thing each day
Day one, make it the sunset canal cruise, it’s the single experience that captures what makes Amsterdam Amsterdam better than anything else on this list. Day two, make it the Van Gogh Museum, book it regardless, it’s genuinely one of the best single-artist collections anywhere in the world.
That’s everything I’ve got.
