2 Day Oxford Itinerary

Two full days, split so you’re not crossing the city twice, with the famous colleges on day one and the quieter corners on day two.

Two days in Oxford is enough to properly cover the grandest colleges and still find time for the smaller ones and the city’s quieter neighbourhoods. Here’s how I’d split it, day by day.

Day 01

The Colleges & the Libraries

Start at Christ Church College for the Great Hall and cathedral, then Radcliffe Square for the Radcliffe Camera and a guided tour inside the Bodleian Library. Lunch at the Vaults & Garden Café, then the Ashmolean Museum in the afternoon, free and genuinely one of the best university museums in the country.

End the day with a punt along the Cherwell from Magdalen Bridge Boathouse, then dinner and a pint at the Turf Tavern, tucked down its narrow historic alley.

Morning Christ Church College, Radcliffe Square, the Bodleian Library
Afternoon The Ashmolean Museum
Evening Punting on the Cherwell, dinner at the Turf Tavern
“Book Christ Church ahead if you’re visiting in summer, this is the busiest college in the city by some margin and queues build fast.”
Day 02

Smaller Colleges & the City’s Quieter Side

Start at Magdalen College for its deer park and cloisters, then Exeter College, one of Oxford’s oldest, where Tolkien studied. Climb the University Church of St Mary the Virgin’s tower for the best panoramic view of the city, over 120 steep steps but worth it for the reward.

Spend the afternoon wandering Jericho, the leafy, canal-side neighbourhood a short walk from the centre, before an evening in the Covered Market or a final walk through Christ Church Meadow as the light fades.

Morning Magdalen College, Exeter College
Afternoon University Church tower, Jericho
Evening The Covered Market, Christ Church Meadow

Getting around across both days

Oxford’s centre is compact and genuinely walkable, most of what’s on this itinerary sits within a 20-minute walk of Carfax Tower. Bikes are common here too, hire one if you’d rather cover ground the way locals do.

If you only have time for one thing each day

Day one, make it the Bodleian Library tour, genuinely unlike anywhere else you’ll visit and worth the modest fee. Day two, make it the University Church tower, the single best view in the city for a fraction of what other viewpoints charge.

That’s everything I’ve got.

A note before you plan around this: prices, opening hours, booking requirements and admission details in this guide were correct at the time of writing, but venues change these often and sometimes without notice. Always check directly with the attraction or its official website before you travel or build a schedule around a specific time or price.

Before travelling to any destination featured on this site, please also check your government’s latest travel advice, as safety situations, entry requirements and travel warnings can change.
