Best Time to Visit Cambridge

Weather, crowds and prices, broken down so you can pick the trip you actually want.

There’s no single correct month to visit Cambridge, it depends whether you’re chasing good weather, low prices, or a proper term-time atmosphere with Evensong. Here’s how the year actually breaks down.

The short answer

May, or September-October

May gives genuinely the best combination of mild weather, blooming gardens along the Backs, and colleges still in term time, meaning Evensong and a proper student atmosphere. September and October offer a similar sweet spot, pleasant temperatures and thinning crowds once the summer holidays end.

“June and July have the best weather on paper, genuinely, but that’s also when exam term restricts college access and crowds peak. May gets you the good weather without either of those downsides.”
Peak season

Summer (June-August): warmest, busiest, no Evensong

Summer brings Cambridge’s warmest weather, highs around 20-22°C, and its biggest crowds given school holidays and ideal punting conditions. Term ends in June though, meaning no Evensong at King’s College Chapel until the new academic year starts in October. Book accommodation and punting tours well ahead if travelling this window.

Low season

Winter (December-February): cheapest, quietest, coldest

January and February bring Cambridge’s lowest hotel prices and thinnest crowds, alongside its coldest, wettest weather. The Fitzwilliam Museum and the city’s other indoor attractions work well regardless, and December brings a genuinely festive Christmas market to the Market Square worth timing a visit around.

Month by month, the short version

January-February: coldest, cheapest, quietest, good for museums.
March-April: colleges often close for exam term, spring blooms begin.
May: a genuine sweet spot, mild weather, term still in session for Evensong.
June-July: peak season, warmest weather, but term has ended.
August: still warm and busy, no students around.
September-October: the other best window, mild, thinning crowds, new term begins.
November-December: cooling down, festive Christmas market in December.

Events worth timing around

May Balls, the elaborate end-of-year college celebrations, bring a burst of formal-dress festivity each June, though most events are for students and alumni rather than visitors. The Cambridge Folk Festival, held each summer, draws a considerable music crowd, and the December Christmas market transforms the Market Square into a proper festive scene.

That’s everything I’ve got.
