2 Day Rio de Janeiro Itinerary

Two full days, split so you’re not backtracking, with Corcovado and Sugarloaf on day one and the beaches and Santa Teresa on day two.

Two days in Rio is enough to properly cover the city’s iconic viewpoints, and still take in the beach culture and bohemian neighbourhood that give the city its character. Here’s how I’d split it, day by day.

Day 01

Christ the Redeemer & Sugarloaf

Start early at Christ the Redeemer, book your Corcovado train or Paineiras van ticket ahead. Spend the afternoon at Sugarloaf Mountain, the two-stage cable car offering a properly different perspective on the city.

Finish the day with dinner in Botafogo, a proper view of Sugarloaf lit up from across the bay.

Morning Christ the Redeemer, Corcovado Mountain
Afternoon Sugarloaf Mountain cable car
Evening Dinner in Botafogo
“Book both attractions for the same day if you can. Corcovado and Sugarloaf sit close enough together that combining them saves a day, and both offer their best light in morning and late afternoon respectively.”
Day 02

Copacabana, Ipanema & Santa Teresa

Spend the morning on Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, the promenade properly worth a slow walk between the two. In the afternoon, head to Santa Teresa, a bohemian hillside neighbourhood of cobbled streets, art studios and the famous Selarón Steps.

Finish the day with a caipirinha and a proper Brazilian dinner, feijoada widely a Rio staple worth seeking out.

Morning Copacabana and Ipanema beaches
Afternoon Santa Teresa, the Selarón Steps
Evening A Brazilian dinner

Getting around across both days

Rio’s taxis and rideshare apps are genuinely reliable for day one’s sights, spread across different parts of the city. Day two is more walkable within each area, a tram or taxi covers the climb up to Santa Teresa.

If you only have time for one thing each day

Day one, make it Christ the Redeemer, genuinely the single most iconic sight in the city. Day two, make it Copacabana, a proper contrast to the mountain views and an easy introduction to Rio’s beach culture.

That’s everything I’ve got.
