Istanbul on a Budget

A city where the exchange rate stretches most budgets a genuinely long way, and the Blue Mosque and the Bazaar’s atmosphere cost nothing at all, here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down too.

Istanbul is genuinely one of the more affordable major cities in the world to visit, the exchange rate stretches most budgets a long way, and several of its best experiences, the Bazaar’s atmosphere, the Blue Mosque, cost nothing at all. Here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down without cutting the trip short.

Sightseeing

The Blue Mosque and both bazaars are free to enter

The Blue Mosque costs nothing to visit, only Hagia Sophia charges tourist admission given its museum-turned-mosque status. Wandering the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar is free too, only individual purchases cost money.

“Take the public ferry across the Bosphorus rather than a private tour boat, genuinely. It costs a fraction of the price and covers much of the same scenic route.”
Timing

Visit outside major religious holidays for lower prices

Istanbul’s hotel prices and crowds spike around major Islamic holidays, considerably higher than the rest of the year given local and regional travel. Booking outside these windows offers noticeably lower rates.

Getting around

Use the tram and ferry over taxis

Istanbul’s tram network covers Sultanahmet and the historic sights cheaply, and the public ferries are considerably cheaper than a private Bosphorus tour. An Istanbulkart transit card covers the whole system, worth picking up on arrival.

Eating

A street food stall beats a Sultanahmet tourist restaurant

A simit, a Turkish sesame bread ring, or a döner from a proper street stall are widely cheap Istanbul staples, considerably cheaper than a sit-down restaurant near Hagia Sophia. A meyhane, a traditional tavern, remains one of the better mid-range options too.

Where to stay

Consider Kadıköy over Sultanahmet

Hotels right in Sultanahmet sit at the top of the price range given the location. Kadıköy, on the Asian side and a short ferry ride away, runs noticeably cheaper while offering a genuinely strong, more local food and coffee scene of its own.

That’s everything I’ve got.

A note before you plan around this: prices, opening hours, booking requirements and admission details in this guide were correct at the time of writing, but venues change these often and sometimes without notice. Always check directly with the attraction or its official website before you travel or build a schedule around a specific time or price.

Before travelling to any destination featured on this site, please also check your government’s latest travel advice, as safety situations, entry requirements and travel warnings can change.
