Nashville on a Budget

When to go, what’s actually free, and where the costs actually are, so you’re not paying more than you need to.

Nashville has a reputation for being pricey, particularly on a big festival weekend, but the city’s best entertainment, live music on Broadway, costs nothing beyond a tip. Here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down without cutting the trip short.

Timing

Avoid CMA Fest, visit January-March

CMA Fest, held each June, brings noticeably inflated hotel prices and packed crowds across the whole city. Winter, January through March, offers noticeably lower rates and thinner crowds instead, and Nashville’s honky-tonks stay lively regardless of season.

“Skip a paid Broadway bar for the live music, genuinely. Most honky-tonks have zero cover charge, tip the band a few dollars instead and you’ve got free entertainment for the whole evening.”
Sightseeing

Nashville’s live music is genuinely free

Walking Broadway and popping into honky-tonks costs nothing beyond a drink or a tip, and the Tennessee State Museum offers free entry too, printing presses and Dolly Parton’s stage costumes among the collection. The Parthenon’s exterior and Centennial Park cost nothing to wander, and Fort Nashborough is free as well.

Getting around

Walk downtown, rideshare for the rest

Downtown Nashville is genuinely compact and walkable, most major sights sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. A rideshare is worth it for East Nashville or the Grand Ole Opry specifically, both a proper distance from the core and not well served by transit.

Eating

The Nashville Farmers’ Market beats a Broadway tourist meal

The Market House at the Nashville Farmers’ Market offers widely good, locally owned food, considerably cheaper than a sit-down restaurant right on Broadway. Hot chicken from a proper local spot rather than a tourist-priced version is worth seeking out too, Nashville’s signature dish done right.

Where to stay

Consider East Nashville over downtown

Hotels right downtown or on Broadway sit at the top of the price range given the location. East Nashville, a short rideshare across the river, runs noticeably cheaper while offering a genuinely strong, more local food and coffee scene of its own.

That’s everything I’ve got.
