Prague on a Budget
When to go, what’s actually free, and where the costs actually are, so you’re not paying more than you need to.
Prague has a reputation for being cheap, and it can be, but the city’s most famous sights, Charles Bridge and the castle grounds, cost nothing to see either way. Here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down without cutting the trip short.
Visit January-March, or November
Winter, outside the Christmas market rush, brings Prague’s lowest hotel prices and thinnest crowds. It’s cold, but the city’s museums and historic interiors work just as well regardless of weather, and February in particular offers hotel rates well below peak season.
Prague Castle’s grounds are genuinely free
Walking the castle grounds costs nothing, only the interiors, St. Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, charge admission. The John Lennon Wall, Charles Bridge, and simply wandering Old Town and Malá Strana’s cobbled streets are all free too. The Old Jewish Cemetery can be viewed from outside without paying the museum entry fee.
Walk everywhere you can
Prague’s historic centre is genuinely compact and walkable end to end, most major sights sit within 30 minutes of each other. A 24-hour or multi-day transport pass is worth it if you’re using trams or the metro more than a couple of times, considerably cheaper than paying per ride.
A local pub beats an Old Town Square tourist meal
Restaurants and beer prices remain genuinely affordable in Prague compared to much of Western Europe, but sitting right on Old Town Square still costs a premium. Walk a few streets back for a traditional Czech pub, goulash and svíčková, and considerably better value than the main square offers.
Consider New Town over Old Town
Hotels with “Old Town” in the name often sit 15-25 minutes from Old Town Square itself, always check the actual address rather than trusting the name. New Town (Nové Město) runs 20-30% cheaper than genuine Old Town locations while staying within easy walking distance of everything.
That’s everything I’ve got.
