San Diego on a Budget
When to go, what’s actually free, and where the costs actually are, so you’re not paying more than you need to.
San Diego has a genuine advantage over most coastal cities on a budget, some of its best experiences, the beaches, the cliffs, the park grounds, cost nothing at all. Here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down without cutting the trip short.
Visit outside peak summer for lower prices
Summer brings San Diego’s highest hotel prices and heaviest crowds, particularly at the beaches. Spring and fall instead offer noticeably lower rates and thinner crowds, and the city’s famously mild climate keeps things pleasant regardless.
San Diego’s beaches and viewpoints are genuinely free
Walking Balboa Park’s grounds and gardens costs nothing, only the individual museums charge admission. La Jolla Cove and its beaches are free to visit too, and Mount Soledad’s panoramic viewpoint costs nothing beyond the drive up.
Walk downtown, budget for the coast
Downtown San Diego and Balboa Park are genuinely compact and walkable, most major sights sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. A rideshare or car rental is worth budgeting for if La Jolla is part of the plan, it’s the one cost that’s hard to avoid.
A local taco shop beats a tourist-strip meal
Fish tacos from a proper local taco shop are widely a San Diego staple, considerably cheaper than a sit-down restaurant in the Gaslamp Quarter. Old Town’s Mexican food scene holds a similarly strong, more affordable spread too.
Consider North Park over the Gaslamp Quarter
Hotels right in the Gaslamp Quarter or downtown sit at the top of the price range given the location. North Park, a short drive or rideshare from downtown, runs noticeably cheaper while offering a genuinely strong, more local food and brewery scene of its own.
That’s everything I’ve got.
