Vancouver on a Budget
A 1,000-acre park that costs nothing to walk, a free ferry hop to Granville Island, and mountains close enough to see from downtown, here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down too.
Vancouver has a genuine reputation for being expensive, but several of its best experiences, Stanley Park, the beaches, the mountain views, cost nothing at all. Here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down without cutting the trip short.
Stanley Park and the beaches are free
Walking or biking the Seawall, visiting the totem poles and exploring Stanley Park’s beaches all cost nothing beyond a bike rental if you want one. Granville Island’s Public Market is free to wander too, only individual purchases cost money.
Visit outside peak summer for lower prices
Summer brings Vancouver’s highest hotel prices and heaviest crowds, particularly around the Seawall and Granville Island. Spring and fall instead offer noticeably lower rates and thinner crowds, and Vancouver’s outdoor sights work just as well regardless.
Walk, bike or take transit over rideshares
Downtown Vancouver and Stanley Park are genuinely walkable and bikeable, most central sights sit within a comfortable ride of each other. The SkyTrain and buses cover the rest of the city cheaply, considerably cheaper than rideshares for most journeys.
Granville Island’s food stalls beat a tourist restaurant
Granville Island Public Market’s food stalls offer widely good, affordable options, considerably cheaper than a sit-down restaurant right on the waterfront. Vancouver’s food truck scene downtown remains one of the better cheap eats destinations in the city too.
Consider Mount Pleasant or Commercial Drive over downtown
Hotels right downtown near Stanley Park sit at the top of the price range given the location. Mount Pleasant and Commercial Drive, both a short transit ride away, run noticeably cheaper while offering a genuinely strong, more local food and coffee scene of their own.
That’s everything I’ve got.
