Best Time to Visit Sedona
A high-desert climate with genuinely intense summer heat, broken down so you can pick the trip you actually want.
There’s no single correct month to visit Sedona, it comes down to how much heat you’re willing to tolerate on a red rock trail, and how much you’d like to pay for the privilege of avoiding it. Here’s how the year actually breaks down.
March-May, or September-November
Spring and fall bring Sedona’s most comfortable hiking weather, mild temperatures without the intense heat of summer or the occasional snow of winter. Both windows offer good conditions for a full day on the trails.
Spring (March-May) and October: busiest, priciest
Spring and October bring Sedona’s heaviest crowds and highest hotel prices, the most comfortable weather driving demand from across the country. Book well ahead if travelling either window, particularly for trailhead parking.
Summer (June-August): hottest, cheapest
Summer brings Sedona’s most intense heat, temperatures regularly climbing into the triple digits, considerably more draining for a full day of hiking. Prices dip given the tougher conditions, and hiking early morning or evening remains manageable.
Month by month, the short version
December-February: cool, occasional snow, cheapest window.
March-April: warming up, comfortable, busy.
May: a genuine sweet spot before summer heat sets in.
June-August: hottest, cheapest, hike early or late.
September: cooling down, thinning crowds.
October-November: the other best window, mild, busy in October.
Events worth timing around
The Sedona International Film Festival each February is genuinely worth timing a visit around if you’re a film fan, drawing filmmakers and audiences from across the country. Sedona’s monsoon season in July and August adds a proper dramatic backdrop too, dramatic afternoon storms rolling in over the red rocks most days.
That’s everything I’ve got.
