Best Time to Visit Berlin
Weather, crowds and prices, broken down so you can pick the trip you actually want.
There’s no single correct month to visit Berlin, it depends whether you’re chasing good weather, low prices, or thin crowds at the city’s biggest sights. Here’s how the year actually breaks down.
May-June, or September
Late spring and early autumn bring Berlin’s most comfortable weather, mild and reasonably dry without July and August’s peak crowds. Both windows still offer plenty of daylight for exploring the city’s parks and outdoor memorials.
Summer (July-August): warmest, busiest, priciest
Summer brings Berlin’s warmest weather and its heaviest crowds, hotel prices climb accordingly and popular attractions like the Reichstag Dome get properly busy. Book well ahead if travelling this window, particularly for Museum Island and the Reichstag.
Winter (November-February): cheapest, quietest, festive in December
Winter brings Berlin’s lowest hotel prices and thinnest crowds outside December specifically, alongside cold, often grey weather. The museums and other indoor attractions work well regardless, and December brings genuinely excellent Christmas markets across the city, alongside a temporary spike in crowds and prices.
Month by month, the short version
January-February: coldest, cheapest outside the festive season, good for museums.
March-April: shoulder season begins, mild and increasingly busy.
May-June: a genuine sweet spot, warm without peak summer’s crowds.
July-August: hottest and busiest, festival season in full swing.
September-October: the other best window, mild, thinning crowds.
November-December: cooling down, Christmas markets bring festive crowds in December.
Events worth timing around
The Berlin International Film Festival, held each February, is one of the world’s most prestigious film events, worth timing a winter visit around if that interests you. Karneval der Kulturen, held over Pentecost weekend each spring, transforms Kreuzberg into a proper celebration of Berlin’s diversity. Christmas markets, running from late November through December, are genuinely worth the trip on their own if festive atmosphere is what you’re after.
That’s everything I’ve got.
