Best Time to Visit Cardiff

Weather, crowds, and a stadium that turns the whole city into one very large pub on matchday, broken down so you can pick the trip you actually want.

There’s no single correct month to visit Cardiff, it depends whether you’re chasing good weather, low prices, or the atmosphere of a Six Nations weekend. Here’s how the year actually breaks down.

The short answer

May-June, or September

Late spring and early autumn bring Cardiff’s most comfortable weather, mild without the heaviest rain typical of a Welsh winter. Both windows still offer plenty of good weather for the castle grounds or a walk around Cardiff Bay.

“Check the Principality Stadium fixture list before booking accommodation, genuinely. Rugby weekends fill the city fast and hotel prices climb considerably, worth knowing either way.”
The big draw

Six Nations rugby, February through March

Wales’s home Six Nations matches at the Principality Stadium turn the whole city centre into a proper matchday atmosphere, packed pubs and a genuinely electric buzz well beyond the stadium itself. Hotel prices climb accordingly, worth booking well ahead if this is the draw.

Low season

Winter (November-January): cheapest, quietest, wettest

Winter brings Cardiff’s lowest accommodation prices and thinnest crowds outside rugby weekends, alongside the wettest weather of the year, typical of Wales generally. Indoor attractions like the National Museum work well regardless, and Cardiff Castle stays open year-round.

Month by month, the short version

January: coldest, wettest, cheapest, good for museums.
February-March: Six Nations rugby brings big crowds on match weekends.
April-May: shoulder season, mild and increasingly pleasant.
June-August: warmest and busiest, best weather for the bay.
September: the other best window, mild, thinning crowds.
October-December: cooling down, Christmas markets bring festive crowds in December.

Other events worth timing around

The Principality Stadium also hosts major concerts and other sporting fixtures throughout the year beyond rugby, worth checking the calendar regardless of season. Cardiff’s Christmas market, running through late November and December, fills the city centre with stalls and a proper festive atmosphere.

That’s everything I’ve got.
