Best Time to Visit Windsor
A mild, temperate climate and a proper English calendar of royal ceremonies, broken down so you can pick the trip you actually want.
There’s no single correct month to visit Windsor, it comes down to whether you’re chasing mild weather for the Long Walk or a specific royal ceremony. Here’s how the year actually breaks down.
April-June, or September
Spring and early autumn bring Windsor’s most comfortable weather, mild temperatures without the peak summer crowds. Both windows offer good conditions for a full day exploring the Castle grounds and the Long Walk.
Summer (June-August): busiest, priciest
Summer brings Windsor’s warmest weather and heaviest crowds, hotel prices climb accordingly, particularly around Ascot week each June. Castle tickets can sell out on popular dates, worth booking well ahead.
Winter (November-February): coldest, quietest, cheapest
Winter brings Windsor’s lowest hotel prices and thinnest crowds, alongside cold, often wet weather. The Castle’s Semi-State Rooms open to visitors roughly October through March too, an extra reason to visit outside summer.
Month by month, the short version
November-February: cold, quiet, cheapest, Semi-State Rooms open.
March-April: shoulder season begins, mild and increasingly warm.
May-June: a genuine sweet spot, warm, before peak crowds.
June: Royal Ascot week, busiest and priciest.
July-August: warm, busiest, school holiday crowds.
September: the other best window, mild, quiet.
Events worth timing around
Royal Ascot each June is genuinely one of the most famous events in the horse racing calendar, worth timing a visit around if it appeals, though it also drives up local hotel prices considerably. The Changing the Guard ceremony runs on a seasonal schedule too, worth checking the official site before building a day around it.
That’s everything I’ve got.
