Sedona on a Budget
A five-dollar day pass covers nearly every trailhead in town, and the views cost nothing at all, here’s how to keep the rest of a Sedona trip affordable too.
Sedona has a genuine reputation for being on the pricier side given its resort hotels, but several of its best sights, the vortex hikes, Tlaquepaque’s atmosphere, cost next to nothing. Here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down without cutting the trip short.
Trailheads cost a five-dollar day pass
A Red Rock Pass covers parking at most trailheads for five dollars a day, or twenty dollars for the year, genuinely the only cost for hiking Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock or Airport Mesa. Wandering Tlaquepaque is free too, only individual purchases cost money.
Visit outside spring and October for lower prices
Sedona’s hotel prices and crowds spike in spring and October, the most comfortable weather driving demand. Summer months instead offer noticeably lower rates, though the heat runs properly intense by midday.
A car is essential, but gas is the only real cost
Sedona genuinely requires a car, public transport is limited and the sights sit spread across the area. There’s no way around this cost, but once you have a car, the sights themselves are cheap or free to visit.
A food truck beats an Uptown tourist restaurant
A food truck or casual café is widely a cheaper Sedona option, considerably better value than a sit-down restaurant right in Uptown. A grocery store picnic remains one of the better budget options too, particularly for a trailside lunch.
Consider the Village of Oak Creek over central Sedona
Hotels right in Uptown Sedona sit at the top of the price range given the location. The Village of Oak Creek, a short drive south, runs noticeably cheaper while staying close to Bell Rock and Cathedral Rock.
That’s everything I’ve got.
