Best Time to Visit Copenhagen

Weather, crowds, and a park that changes its whole personality with the seasons, broken down so you can pick the trip you actually want.

There’s no single correct month to visit Copenhagen, it depends whether you’re chasing good weather, low prices, or a particular Tivoli season, summer rides or winter Christmas markets. Here’s how the year actually breaks down.

The short answer

May-June, or September

Late spring and early autumn bring Copenhagen’s most comfortable weather, mild and increasingly long daylight hours without July and August’s peak crowds. June in particular is widely considered the sweet spot, warm days and the Distortion street party adding a proper local flavour.

“Check Tivoli’s opening calendar before you travel, genuinely. It closes for several weeks between seasons, and turning up expecting the gardens open can mean a wasted trip if the dates don’t line up.”
Peak season

Summer (June-August): warmest, busiest, priciest

Summer brings Copenhagen’s warmest weather and its heaviest crowds, hotel prices climb accordingly and Tivoli’s summer season runs in full swing. Book well ahead if travelling this window, particularly for accommodation near the harbour.

Low season

Winter (November-January): cheapest, quietest, cosiest

Winter brings Copenhagen’s lowest hotel prices and thinnest crowds, alongside cold, often grey weather that makes the city’s hygge culture properly click into place. Tivoli’s Christmas season, running late November through early January, adds a genuinely magical counterpoint to the cold.

Month by month, the short version

January-February: coldest, cheapest, quietest, Tivoli mostly closed.
March-April: shoulder season begins, mild and increasingly busy.
May-June: a genuine sweet spot, warm without peak summer’s crowds.
July-August: warmest and busiest, book ahead for everything.
September: the other best window, mild, thinning crowds.
November-December: cooling down, Tivoli’s Christmas season brings festive crowds.

Events worth timing around

Tivoli’s Christmas market, running from mid-November through early January, is genuinely worth the trip on its own if festive atmosphere is what you’re after. Distortion each June, a proper street party spread across the city, and Copenhagen Jazz Festival each July add a lively counterpoint to the city’s calendar too.

That’s everything I’ve got.
