2 Day Copenhagen Itinerary

Two full days, split so you’re not backtracking, with the harbour and Tivoli on day one and the castles and canals on day two.

Two days in Copenhagen is enough to properly cover the harbourfront and Tivoli, and still get out to the royal castles and canal neighbourhoods for a proper taste of the wider city. Here’s how I’d split it, day by day.

Day 01

The Harbour & Tivoli

Start at Nyhavn, taking in the colourful houses and a coffee before the crowds build. Walk out to the Little Mermaid and Amalienborg Palace, timing the walk for the noon changing of the guard if it lines up.

In the afternoon, spend the rest of the day at Tivoli Gardens, rides, gardens and live performances right next to Central Station. Finish the day with dinner and a proper evening walk through the lit-up gardens after dark.

Morning Nyhavn, the Little Mermaid, Amalienborg Palace
Afternoon Tivoli Gardens
Evening Dinner, the illuminated gardens after dark
“Book Tivoli tickets online a day ahead, genuinely. It’s a small discount, but the real benefit is skipping the entry queue, which can run to 20 minutes on a sunny Saturday.”
Day 02

Castles & Canals

Spend the morning at Rosenborg Castle, a Renaissance palace holding the Danish crown jewels, and the King’s Garden surrounding it. Walk through Torvehallerne food market for lunch, a proper way to sample Danish food in one covered space.

In the afternoon, head to Christianshavn, a canal-laced neighbourhood with a genuinely different pace to the city centre, the freetown of Christiania sits within it too, worth a wander if it appeals. Finish the day with dinner in Vesterbro or back in the centre.

Morning Rosenborg Castle, the King’s Garden
Afternoon Torvehallerne, Christianshavn, Christiania
Evening Dinner in Vesterbro

Getting around across both days

Central Copenhagen is genuinely walkable, most of day one’s sights sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. A rented bike is worth it for day two, a properly local way to cover more ground between Rosenborg and Christianshavn.

If you only have time for one thing each day

Day one, make it Nyhavn, genuinely the single most recognisable image of the city. Day two, make it Christianshavn, a proper contrast to the city centre and one of the most distinctive neighbourhoods in Copenhagen.

That’s everything I’ve got.
