Copenhagen on a Budget

When to go, what’s actually free, and where the costs actually are, so you’re not paying more than you need to.

Copenhagen has a reputation for being one of Europe’s pricier capitals, but several of its best experiences, the harbourfront, the canals, the free walking tours, cost nothing at all. Here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down without cutting the trip short.

Timing

Visit outside peak summer for lower prices

Summer brings Copenhagen’s highest hotel prices and heaviest crowds, particularly around Tivoli. Spring and autumn instead offer noticeably lower rates and thinner crowds, and Copenhagen’s outdoor sights work just as well regardless.

“Rent a bike instead of relying on taxis, genuinely. Copenhagen is famously bike-friendly, rentals are cheap, and it’s a properly local way to cover ground the city was actually built for.”
Sightseeing

Copenhagen’s harbour and free walking tours cost nothing

Walking Nyhavn, the Little Mermaid promenade, and Christianshavn’s canals costs nothing, and free walking tours run daily covering most of the city’s major history with just a tip at the end. Amalienborg Palace’s courtyard and the changing of the guard are free to watch too, only the museum inside charges.

Getting around

Walk or bike the centre

Central Copenhagen is genuinely compact and walkable, most major sights sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. A rented bike is widely the cheapest, most local way to cover ground further out, considerably cheaper than taxis or rideshares.

Eating

Torvehallerne beats a Nyhavn tourist meal

Torvehallerne food market’s stalls offer widely good, affordable options, considerably cheaper than a sit-down restaurant right on the canal in Nyhavn. Smørrebrød from a proper local spot is worth seeking out too, a genuine Danish classic without the tourist markup.

Where to stay

Consider Nørrebro or Vesterbro over the city centre

Hotels right in the city centre near Nyhavn sit at the top of the price range given the location. Nørrebro and Vesterbro, both a short bike ride away, run noticeably cheaper while offering a genuinely strong, more local food and coffee scene of their own.

That’s everything I’ve got.
