Best Time to Visit Charleston
A humid subtropical climate with one properly brutal stretch of summer, broken down so you can pick the trip you actually want.
There’s no single correct month to visit Charleston, it comes down to how much heat and humidity you’re willing to tolerate, and how much you’d like to pay for the privilege of avoiding it. Here’s how the year actually breaks down.
March-May, or September-November
Spring and fall bring Charleston’s most comfortable weather, mild temperatures without the intense heat and humidity of summer. Spring also brings blooming gardens and azaleas, though that popularity drives prices up considerably.
Spring (March-May): busiest, priciest
Spring brings Charleston’s heaviest crowds and highest hotel prices, garden enthusiasts drawn by blooming azaleas and dogwoods across the city and nearby plantations. Book well ahead if travelling this window.
Summer (June-August): hottest, most humid
Summer brings Charleston’s most intense heat and humidity, considerably more draining for a full day of walking than the rest of the year. Prices dip slightly given the tougher conditions, and hurricane season runs through this window too.
Month by month, the short version
December-February: mild winter, cheapest, quietest.
March-April: gardens in bloom, busiest and priciest.
May: a genuine sweet spot, still mild, thinning crowds.
June-August: hot, humid, hurricane season begins.
September-October: the other best window, mild, quieter.
November: cooling down, still a reasonable window for sightseeing.
Events worth timing around
Spoleto Festival USA each May and June is genuinely worth timing a visit around if performing arts appeal, a major festival of opera, theatre and dance held across the city. The Charleston Wine + Food Festival each March and the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition each February add a proper local counterpoint to the city’s usual pace too.
That’s everything I’ve got.
