Best Time to Visit Portland
Weather, crowds and a rose garden that only really works one time of year, broken down so you can pick the trip you actually want.
There’s no single correct month to visit Portland, it depends whether you’re chasing good weather, low prices, or the roses in full bloom. Here’s how the year actually breaks down.
June-September
Summer brings Portland’s driest, most reliable weather, considerably less rain than the rest of the year and plenty of daylight for a full day of sightseeing. The International Rose Test Garden peaks in June, worth timing a visit around if roses are the draw.
Summer (July-August): busiest, priciest
July and August bring Portland’s heaviest crowds and highest hotel prices, particularly around Washington Park. Book well ahead if travelling this window, particularly for accommodation.
November-March: cheapest, quietest, wettest
Winter brings Portland’s lowest hotel prices and thinnest crowds, alongside genuinely persistent rain and grey skies typical of the Pacific Northwest. Powell’s and other indoor sights work well regardless, and the city’s cosy café culture suits the season well.
Month by month, the short version
November-March: wettest, cheapest, quietest, cosy café season.
April-May: shoulder season begins, mild and increasingly dry.
June: the roses peak, warm without peak summer’s crowds.
July-August: driest and busiest, book ahead for everything.
September: the other best window, mild, thinning crowds.
October: cooling down, rain returning, still reasonable for sightseeing.
Events worth timing around
The Portland Rose Festival each June, celebrating the city’s floral identity with parades and events, is genuinely one of the biggest annual celebrations, timed around the rose garden’s peak bloom. The Oregon Brewers Festival each summer and Feast Portland each September add a proper food and drink counterpoint to the city’s calendar too.
That’s everything I’ve got.
