Charleston on a Budget

A row of pastel houses and a seawall park that both cost nothing to walk, here’s how to keep the rest of a Charleston trip affordable too.

Charleston has a genuine reputation for being on the pricier side for a Southern city, hotel rates especially, but several of its best sights, Rainbow Row, the Battery, cost nothing at all. Here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down without cutting the trip short.

Sightseeing

Rainbow Row and the Battery are free

Walking Rainbow Row, the historic district’s streets and the Battery costs nothing, only Fort Sumter’s ferry and the carriage tours charge admission. Several of the city’s historic churches are free to step inside too.

“Skip the carriage tour and walk the historic district yourself with a free map, genuinely. Charleston’s historic core is genuinely compact, and a self-guided walk covers most of the same ground for nothing.”
Timing

Visit outside spring for lower prices

Spring brings Charleston’s highest hotel prices and heaviest crowds, azaleas and dogwoods drawing garden enthusiasts from across the country. Late summer or winter instead offer noticeably lower rates, and the historic sights work well regardless.

Getting around

Walk the historic district over renting a car

Charleston’s historic peninsula is genuinely compact and walkable, most sights sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. A car only becomes worthwhile for a plantation day trip outside the city.

Eating

A food truck or oyster bar beats a King Street tourist restaurant

Shrimp and grits or a bowl of she-crab soup from a proper local spot are widely Lowcountry staples, considerably cheaper than a sit-down restaurant on King Street. A farmers market or roadside seafood shack remains one of the better cheap eats too.

Where to stay

Consider North Charleston over the historic district

Hotels right in the historic district sit at the top of the price range given the location. North Charleston, a short drive or rideshare away, runs noticeably cheaper while staying within easy reach of downtown.

That’s everything I’ve got.
