2 Day Charleston Itinerary
Two full days, split so you’re not backtracking, with the historic district on day one and a plantation day trip on day two.
Two days in Charleston is enough to properly cover the historic district’s icons, and still get out to one of the Lowcountry’s grand plantation estates. Here’s how I’d split it, day by day.
The Historic District
Start with Rainbow Row and a horse-drawn carriage tour in the morning, routes assigned by city lottery. Take the ferry to Fort Sumter in the afternoon, book tickets ahead as it’s the only way to reach the fort.
Finish the day at the Battery, then a proper Lowcountry dinner, shrimp and grits or she-crab soup widely worth seeking out.
Afternoon Fort Sumter National Monument
Evening The Battery, Lowcountry dinner
A Plantation Day Trip
Take a day trip to one of the Lowcountry’s historic plantations, several sit within a short drive of Charleston, offering gardens, house tours and honest accounts of the region’s history. Boone Hall and Magnolia Plantation are both popular choices, each with a different focus.
Combine the visit with a stop at a roadside seafood shack on the way back if timing allows, a proper way to close out a Lowcountry day.
Afternoon Grounds and history exhibits
Evening Return to Charleston for dinner
Getting around across both days
The historic district is genuinely walkable on day one, most sights sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. Day two requires a car or organised tour, the plantations sit a short drive outside the city.
If you only have time for one thing each day
Day one, make it Fort Sumter, genuinely the single most historically significant site in the city. Day two, make it a plantation visit, a proper contrast to the downtown pace and an honest look at the region’s fuller history.
That’s everything I’ve got.
