Honolulu with Kids
A zoo built on the grounds of a Hawaiian royal park, an aquarium small enough that nobody melts down, and a beach where sea turtles turn up in the surf, the version of Honolulu built for families.
Honolulu works well with kids in tow, several of its best sights are compact, air-conditioned or outdoor by design, and the beach itself does a lot of the entertaining on its own. Here’s how I’d spend a family day here.
Waikiki Beach
A properly good sight for kids, the calm, shallow waters at the Waikiki end of the beach suit young swimmers well, and beginner surf lessons are widely available for older kids keen to try. Sea turtles genuinely turn up in the surf here from time to time, a proper highlight if you’re lucky.
Waikiki Aquarium
A properly compact, air-conditioned aquarium, the second-oldest in the country, home to Hawaiian monk seals and interactive tide pools where kids can touch sea cucumbers and hermit crabs. Small enough that nobody melts down, a genuine relief with younger kids in tow.
Honolulu Zoo
A proper 42-acre zoo built on the grounds of a former Hawaiian royal park, home to elephants, giraffes and a dedicated Keiki Zoo area for younger kids. Stroller-friendly paths and shaded picnic areas make it an easy half-day out.
Pearl Harbor’s Battleship Missouri and Bowfin
A properly hands-on history lesson, older kids can climb aboard the Battleship Missouri and the USS Bowfin submarine, both included on the wider Pearl Harbor site. Genuinely engaging for kids curious about ships and wartime history.
Kapiolani Park
A proper green space between Waikiki and Diamond Head, Kapiolani Park has open lawns and playgrounds for running around. Free, unhurried, and an easy way to burn off energy between the bigger sights.
Where to eat with kids
Shave ice is genuinely an easy, reliable win with kids, cold and colourful and available at nearly every corner. A plate lunch works well for families too, casual and quick between sights.
A few practical notes
Waikiki is genuinely stroller-friendly, mostly flat, paved paths along the beachfront. Pack proper reef-safe sunscreen and sun hats, Hawaii’s sun is strong even on cloudy days, and kids tire faster in the heat than they realise.
That’s everything I’ve got.
