24 Hours in Honolulu

A sunken battleship you can visit by boat, a beach that shaped modern surfing, and a volcanic crater with a view worth the climb, one proper day on Oahu’s south shore.

Honolulu packs an unusual amount into a single day, a moving piece of American history, one of the most famous stretches of sand in the world, and a hike with a view that earns every bit of the climb. Here’s how I’d spend 24 hours here.

Morning

Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial

Start at Pearl Harbor National Memorial, arriving early, the visitor centre and the USS Arizona Memorial boat program require a reservation and fill up considerably faster than most visitors expect. Standing over the sunken hull of the USS Arizona, still leaking a small amount of oil after more than eighty years, is a genuinely moving experience.

“Book your USS Arizona Memorial ticket on Recreation.gov weeks ahead. Time slots release 56 days out and sell out fast, particularly in peak season, and there’s no walk-up option anymore.”
Afternoon

Diamond Head

Head to Diamond Head State Monument, a volcanic crater a short drive from Waikiki, the hike to the summit takes 40 to 60 minutes and rewards you with a genuinely sweeping view over the south shore. Book a parking or entry reservation ahead, spots are limited and fill up on busy days.

Afternoon Diamond Head State Monument
Getting there A short drive or bus from Waikiki
Evening

Waikiki Beach and a plate lunch

End the day at Waikiki Beach, once a playground for Hawaiian royalty and still one of the most recognisable stretches of sand in the world. Grab a plate lunch or poke bowl for dinner, widely a Hawaiian staple, then watch the sunset from the sand before a proper evening along Kalakaua Avenue.

Getting around

Waikiki is genuinely walkable, most of the beach’s hotels, shops and restaurants sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head both require a car, rideshare or organised tour, neither is reachable on foot from Waikiki.

If you only have time for one thing

Make it Pearl Harbor. It’s the single most significant historical site on Oahu, and the USS Arizona Memorial is a proper, moving introduction to the island before you’ve even reached the beach.

That’s everything I’ve got.
