Charleston with Kids
A two-story tank swimming with sharks and turtles, a real hospital that nurses injured sea turtles back to health, and a boat ride out to the fort where the Civil War began, the version of Charleston built for families.
Charleston works well with kids in tow, several of its best sights are hands-on by design, and a boat ride to Fort Sumter offers a proper adventure on its own. Here’s how I’d spend a family day here.
South Carolina Aquarium
A properly immersive aquarium along the harbourfront, home to a two-story Great Ocean Tank and a working sea turtle hospital, kids can watch rehabilitation efforts up close. A properly engaging spot for kids of any age, worth a full morning.
Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry
A properly interactive museum in the heart of downtown, home to a splash pad, an art room and a two-story aquarium of its own with over 50 species. Adults must accompany kids throughout, a genuine full-morning option given the range of exhibits.
Fort Sumter by ferry
A properly fun sight for kids, the boat ride out to Fort Sumter is a genuine adventure in itself, and ranger talks bring the Civil War history to life once you’re there. A good, active way to combine history with an outing on the water.
A horse-drawn carriage tour
A properly gentle family activity, kids tend to love the horses as much as the history, and the slow pace suits younger attention spans well. Routes are assigned by city lottery, so the exact stops vary each time.
Waterfront Park
A proper green space along the Cooper River, Waterfront Park has a fountain built for splashing on hot days and open lawns for running around. Free, unhurried, and an easy way to burn off energy between the bigger sights.
Where to eat with kids
A shrimp burger or hush puppies are genuinely an easy, reliable win with kids, casual Lowcountry staples available at most local spots. A food truck or ice cream stop works well for families too, quick and easy between sights.
A few practical notes
Central Charleston is genuinely stroller-friendly, though some cobblestone streets can be bumpy. Pack proper sun protection and water, the heat and humidity here can catch families off guard, particularly in summer.
That’s everything I’ve got.
