Copenhagen with Kids

A science centre with a giant soap bubble machine, an amusement park older than most countries’ railways, and a bronze mermaid worth the walk out to see, the version of Copenhagen built for families.

Copenhagen works well with kids in tow, several of its best sights are hands-on or thrilling by design, and the whole city runs on a proper bike-friendly, family-oriented pace. Here’s how I’d spend a family day here.

The hands-on one

Experimentarium

A properly interactive science centre a short trip from the centre, hands-on exhibits across the human body, nature and technology, including a giant soap bubble machine kids can stand inside. A dedicated Miniverse area caters to toddlers too, built for touching everything.

“Combine Experimentarium with Tivoli on the same trip if your kids are keen on both, properly. They’re both properly hands-on and thrilling in different ways, worth splitting across two half-day visits.”
The classic

Tivoli Gardens

Widely a hit with kids of any age, one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, rollercoasters, a pantomime theatre and gardens all in one place. Entry and ride tickets are sold separately, worth checking the age and height limits for specific rides ahead.

The photo stop

The Little Mermaid

A properly fun landmark for kids, the small bronze statue based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale makes for an easy stop along a harbourside walk. Free to visit, and a good excuse to tell the story on the way there.

Something active

A family bike ride

A properly local activity, Copenhagen’s cycling infrastructure is genuinely built for families, dedicated lanes and cargo bike rentals make it easy to get around with kids in tow. A proper way to see the city the way locals actually do.

The free one

The King’s Garden

A proper green space beside Rosenborg Castle, the King’s Garden has open lawns and playgrounds for running around. Free, unhurried, and an easy way to burn off energy between the bigger sights.

Where to eat with kids

A hot dog from a proper pølsevogn, Copenhagen’s classic street food cart, is genuinely an easy, reliable win with kids, cheap and available on most corners. Torvehallerne food market works well for families too, plenty of variety in one covered space.

A few practical notes

Copenhagen is genuinely stroller-friendly, flat terrain and wide pavements throughout most of the city. A cargo bike rental is worth considering with younger kids, a properly local way to cover ground without tiring anyone out.

That’s everything I’ve got.
