San Diego with Kids

A zoo genuinely among the best in the world, a real aircraft carrier kids can walk through deck by deck, and tide pools full of actual sea creatures, the version of San Diego built for families.

San Diego works well with kids in tow, several of its best sights are hands-on or outdoor by design, and the mild climate keeps everyone properly comfortable year-round. Here’s how I’d spend a family day here.

The classic

San Diego Zoo

Widely one of the best zoos in the world, home to over 3,700 animals across more than 650 species, including giant pandas, and pioneering open-air, cageless enclosures. Allow a proper full day, the grounds are considerably bigger than most zoos.

“Take the aerial tram over the zoo if your kids are tired of walking, properly. It’s included with admission, and the view over the exhibits from above is a genuine highlight on its own.”
The real ship

The USS Midway Museum

A properly hands-on history lesson, kids can walk the flight deck, climb into cockpits, and explore the living quarters of a real aircraft carrier. The audio tour covers more than 60 stops, budget a proper three to four hours.

The hands-on one

San Diego Air & Space Museum

California’s official air and space museum, interactive flight simulators and a Kid’s Aviation Action Hangar sit alongside a real Apollo 9 command module. Genuinely engaging for kids of any age, and conveniently located within Balboa Park.

Something free

Tide pooling at La Jolla

A properly fun, free activity for kids, the tide pools around La Jolla reveal starfish, anemones and crabs at low tide. Check tide times before you go, and bring water shoes for the rocks.

Something active

Balboa Park’s playgrounds and gardens

Beyond the museums, Balboa Park has proper playgrounds and open lawns for running around, plus the Botanical Building and its reflecting pool worth a stop. A good, active break between the bigger sights.

Where to eat with kids

A fish taco is genuinely an easy, reliable win with kids, cheap and available at nearly every neighbourhood taco shop. Old Town’s casual Mexican restaurants work well for families too, plenty of variety in one spot.

A few practical notes

San Diego is genuinely stroller-friendly across most of the city, and the mild year-round climate means outdoor plans rarely need a backup. Booking Zoo and USS Midway tickets ahead is worth it with kids in tow especially, walk-up queues can eat a proper chunk of the day.

That’s everything I’ve got.

A note before you plan around this: prices, opening hours, booking requirements and admission details in this guide were correct at the time of writing, but venues change these often and sometimes without notice. Always check directly with the attraction or its official website before you travel or build a schedule around a specific time or price.

Before travelling to any destination featured on this site, please also check your government’s latest travel advice, as safety situations, entry requirements and travel warnings can change.
