Savannah with Kids
A mirror maze built entirely around mathematical patterns, a lighthouse worth every one of its 178 steps, and a wildlife centre with real alligators, deer and birds of prey, the version of Savannah built for families.
Savannah works well with kids in tow, several of its best sights are hands-on or adventurous by design, and Tybee Island offers a whole beach day within easy reach. Here’s how I’d spend a family day here.
Savannah Children’s Museum
A properly interactive outdoor museum in Tricentennial Park, home to an exploration maze, a puppet theatre and the new STEAM Center with an 1,800-square-foot mirror maze. Properly built for touching and exploring, worth a full morning.
ArtZeum at the Jepson Center
A properly interactive art space designed for kids, hands-on exhibits challenge young visitors to think differently about art. A genuine indoor option if the weather turns, worth a couple of hours.
Tybee Island Light Station
A properly fun sight for kids, Georgia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse rewards a climb of 178 steps with sweeping coastal views. Combine it with a beach afternoon at Tybee Island, roughly 20 minutes from downtown.
Oatland Island Wildlife Center
A properly immersive nature centre, a mile-and-a-half boardwalk trail takes families past alligators, deer, birds of prey and other native Georgia wildlife. A genuine full morning or afternoon out, a short drive from downtown.
Forsyth Park’s playgrounds
A proper free spot for kids, Forsyth Park has two dedicated playgrounds, one for toddlers and one for older children, plus open lawns for running around. Free, unhurried, and an easy way to burn off energy between the bigger sights.
Where to eat with kids
A praline or a scoop of ice cream is genuinely an easy, reliable win with kids, sweet and available at nearly every corner on River Street. A meat-and-three lunch counter works well for families too, casual and quick between sights.
A few practical notes
The Historic District is genuinely stroller-friendly, though some cobblestone streets near River Street can be bumpy. Pack proper sun protection and water, Savannah’s heat and humidity can catch families off guard, particularly in summer.
That’s everything I’ve got.
