24 Hours in Charleston

A row of pastel-coloured Georgian houses that’s become one of the most photographed streets in America, an island fort where the first shots of the Civil War were fired, and a horse-drawn carriage clip-clopping over cobblestones, one proper day in the Holy City.

Charleston packs an unusual amount into a single day, one of the most photogenic streets in the country, a significant piece of American history a short boat ride away, and a Lowcountry food scene worth the trip on its own. Here’s how I’d spend 24 hours here.

Morning

Rainbow Row and a carriage tour

Start with a walk down East Bay Street to Rainbow Row, the longest cluster of Georgian row houses in the United States, their pastel facades one of the most photographed sights in the city. Follow it with a horse-drawn carriage tour, routes are assigned by a city lottery system, so the exact stops vary, but most cover the historic district’s mansions, churches and gardens.

“Book your carriage tour for the morning if you can. Charleston gets properly hot and humid by afternoon, and horses and passengers alike fare better before the heat sets in.”
Afternoon

Fort Sumter

Take the ferry from Liberty Square to Fort Sumter, the island fortification where the first shots of the Civil War were fired in 1861. Book tickets ahead, the boat is the only way to reach the fort, and ranger talks add proper context once you’re there.

Evening

Lowcountry dinner and the Battery

End the day with a proper Lowcountry dinner, shrimp and grits or she-crab soup are widely regional staples worth seeking out. Finish with a walk along the Battery, a seawall park at the tip of the peninsula with genuinely striking views over the harbour toward Fort Sumter.

Getting around

The historic district is genuinely walkable, Rainbow Row, the carriage tour stables and the Battery all sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. Fort Sumter requires the ferry from Liberty Square, a short walk or drive from downtown.

If you only have time for one thing

Make it Fort Sumter. It’s the single most historically significant site in the city, and standing where the Civil War began is a proper introduction to Charleston before you’ve even reached Rainbow Row.

That’s everything I’ve got.
