Boston with Kids
A pedal boat on the lagoon, a hard hat in the Construction Zone, and a warship kids actually get to climb, the version of Boston that actually works with children in tow.
Boston is genuinely one of the more family-friendly big cities in the country, compact enough to walk between sights and packed with museums built for small hands to touch rather than just look. Here’s how to spend the time on what actually works with kids.
Swan Boats and the Public Garden
Widely the easiest win in the city with kids, the Public Garden’s pedal-powered Swan Boats have run since 1877, and the nearby Make Way for Ducklings statues make for a proper photo stop before or after. Boston Common sits right next door too, plenty of open space to run once the boat ride’s done.
Boston Children’s Museum
A properly hands-on museum built for exactly this, the three-story New Balance Foundation Climb and the Construction Zone, complete with hard hats and real tools, keep kids busy for hours. No shushing here, nearly every exhibit is designed to be touched.
New England Aquarium
Right on the harbor, the Giant Ocean Tank holds sea turtles, sharks and rays in a properly mesmerising four-story centrepiece kids can watch for ages. Harbour seals greet visitors before they even step inside, a proper first impression for younger kids.
The Rose Kennedy Greenway
An underrated stretch, the Rings Fountain for splashing, an interactive labyrinth, and the colourful Greenway Carousel featuring animals inspired by Boston Harbor. Food trucks and rotating art installations keep the whole park feeling different visit to visit.
The USS Constitution Museum
A properly hands-on maritime history museum, kids hoist sails, scrub decks and design their own ship pennant rather than just reading placards. The actual USS Constitution, “Old Ironsides,” is docked right alongside, still the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat.
If the weather turns
The Museum of Science, widely one of the best in the country for kids, covers a Discovery Center, a Live Animal Care Center and a proper Planetarium all under one roof. The Boston Children’s Museum works well as a full rainy-day plan too, and Sunday afternoons from 1-4pm run just $1 per person, one of the best deals in the city.
Eating with kids
The North End’s pizza and pastry shops are widely reliable crowd-pleasers, Regina Pizzeria and Mike’s Pastry both come recommended for exactly this. Time Out Market in Fenway offers a wider spread under one roof too, 15 booths covering enough variety that even picky eaters find something.
A few practical notes
Boston is broadly one of the most walkable big cities in America with kids in tow, compact neighbourhoods mean less time in transit and more time actually doing things. A Boston CityPASS is worth considering if you’re planning several paid attractions, it bundles admission at a real saving.
That’s everything I’ve got.
