Best Time to Visit Boston

Weather, crowds and prices, broken down so you can pick the trip you actually want.

There’s no single correct month to visit Boston, it depends whether you’re chasing fall foliage, low prices, or thin crowds, and those three rarely line up on the same dates. Here’s how the year actually breaks down.

The short answer

September-October

Fall brings Boston’s most comfortable weather, warm days, cool evenings, and genuinely spectacular foliage across New England once October rolls around. Crowds and prices climb accordingly, this is peak leaf-peeping season, but the weather trade-off is considerable.

“Book well ahead if you want early October specifically, genuinely. That narrow window between summer humidity and the foliage rush books up fast, hotels included.”
Peak season

Summer (June-August): warmest, busiest, most humid

Summer brings Boston’s warmest weather, highs in the low 80s°F, alongside its heaviest crowds and highest hotel prices. Humidity can make walking the Freedom Trail considerably less comfortable at midday, plan outdoor sightseeing for morning or evening if visiting this window.

Low season

Winter (December-March): cheapest, quietest, coldest

January and February bring Boston’s lowest hotel prices, alongside genuinely cold, sometimes snowy weather. The museums, the Public Library and other indoor attractions work well regardless, and the Freedom Trail’s outdoor stops are still walkable, just considerably chillier.

Month by month, the short version

January-February: coldest, cheapest, quietest, good for museums.
March-April: shoulder season begins, mild and increasingly busy, Boston Marathon in April.
May-June: a genuine sweet spot, warm without summer’s peak humidity, graduation season in late May.
July-August: hottest and busiest, highest prices of the year.
September-October: the best window, mild and clear, foliage peaks in October.
November-December: cooling down, festive and walkable, holiday lights on the Common in December.

Events worth timing around

The Boston Marathon, held on Patriots’ Day in April, draws huge crowds and closes major roads across the city, worth knowing about even if you’re not running. Red Sox season runs April through October, a game at Fenway Park is a proper Boston experience if the dates line up. Fall foliage, best from late September through October, transforms the whole region and books up hotels accordingly.

That’s everything I’ve got.
