24 Hours in Rio de Janeiro

A 30-metre statue with arms spread wide over an entire city, a granite mountain reached by a two-stage cable car ride, and a stretch of sand famous enough to have hosted over a million people for a single concert, one proper day in the Marvelous City.

Rio de Janeiro packs an unusual amount into a single day, one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World, a properly iconic cable car ride, and a beach that’s become synonymous with the whole city. Here’s how I’d spend 24 hours here.

Morning

Christ the Redeemer

Start early at Christ the Redeemer, the art deco statue standing atop Corcovado Mountain since 1931. Take the historic Corcovado Train, Brazil’s first electrified railway, winding through Tijuca National Park’s rainforest on the way up. Arrive right at opening, the clearest views come before clouds or haze settle in later in the day.

“Book your Corcovado Train ticket online through the official site ahead of time. It’s a properly popular attraction that sells out, particularly in high season, and pre-booking skips the worst of the queue.”
Afternoon

Sugarloaf Mountain

Head to Sugarloaf Mountain, a two-stage cable car ride up the 396-metre granite peak offering sweeping views of Guanabara Bay, Botafogo and Copacabana. A properly different perspective on the city than from Corcovado, worth the trip on its own.

Afternoon Sugarloaf Mountain cable car
Getting there A short drive or taxi from Corcovado
Evening

Copacabana Beach

End the day at Copacabana Beach, the city’s most famous stretch of sand, its beachfront promenade filling with joggers, vendors and football games as the evening cools down. A proper way to close out the day, sunset drinks at a beachside kiosk widely a Rio tradition.

Getting around

Rio’s metro is genuinely efficient for central routes, though a taxi or rideshare covers the journey between Corcovado, Sugarloaf and Copacabana more directly. Traffic can be heavy, worth building in extra time.

If you only have time for one thing

Make it Christ the Redeemer. It’s the single most iconic sight in the city, and standing at its base is a proper introduction to Rio’s scale before you’ve even reached Sugarloaf.

That’s everything I’ve got.

A note before you plan around this: prices, opening hours, booking requirements and admission details in this guide were correct at the time of writing, but venues change these often and sometimes without notice. Always check directly with the attraction or its official website before you travel or build a schedule around a specific time or price.

Before travelling to any destination featured on this site, please also check your government’s latest travel advice, as safety situations, entry requirements and travel warnings can change.
