2 Day Newcastle Itinerary | Chase the Pigeon

2 Day Newcastle Itinerary

Two full days, split so you’re not backtracking, with the Quayside and the Angel of the North on day one and the coast on day two.

Two days in Newcastle is enough to properly cover the Quayside and the city’s public art, and still get out to the coast for a proper taste of the wider Tyneside area. Here’s how I’d split it, day by day.

Day 01

The Quayside & the Angel

Start at Newcastle Castle Keep, then walk down Grey Street to the Quayside, taking in the Tyne Bridge and the Millennium Bridge. Cross into Gateshead for BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, free and always worth a proper hour.

In the afternoon, browse Grainger Market for lunch, then take a short bus out to the Angel of the North before dinner and a proper evening back in the city.

Morning Newcastle Castle Keep, Grey Street, the Quayside
Afternoon BALTIC, Grainger Market, the Angel of the North
Evening Dinner and Newcastle’s nightlife
“Time the Angel of the North for late afternoon. The light on the steel changes properly through the day, and a golden hour visit is worth the extra bus ride.”
Day 02

The Coast

Spend the day on the Metro out to Tynemouth, a genuinely lovely coastal town with a ruined priory and castle overlooking the North Sea. The Sunday market by the Metro station is worth timing a visit around if the day lines up, and Tynemouth’s Long Sands beach is a proper spot for a walk regardless of season.

In the afternoon, head to nearby Whitley Bay or back into Newcastle via Jesmond Dene, a genuinely peaceful wooded valley on the way back into the city.

Morning Tynemouth Priory and Castle, Long Sands beach
Afternoon Whitley Bay or Jesmond Dene
Evening Return to Newcastle for dinner

Getting around across both days

Central Newcastle is genuinely walkable, most of day one’s sights sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. The Tyne and Wear Metro is worth a day ticket for day two, an easy, scenic way to reach Tynemouth and the coast.

If you only have time for one thing each day

Day one, make it the Quayside, genuinely the single best introduction to the city’s character and history. Day two, make it Tynemouth, a proper contrast to the city and one of the best coastal day trips in the North East.

That’s everything I’ve got.
