2 Day Chicago Itinerary

Two full days, split so you’re not backtracking across the Loop, with downtown on day one and the museums and neighbourhoods on day two.

Two days in Chicago is enough to do downtown properly and still get out to the Museum Campus and one of the city’s neighbourhoods beyond the Loop. Here’s how I’d split it, day by day.

Day 01

Downtown & the River

Start with a Chicago Architecture river cruise, the best orientation to the city and worth booking ahead. Walk the Riverwalk to Millennium Park, Cloud Gate is the obligatory photo stop, then spend a couple of hours at the Art Institute of Chicago next door, home to the largest Impressionist collection outside France.

Head up Willis Tower Skydeck in the afternoon, book ahead and go early in your slot to beat the queue. End the day with deep dish pizza and a Chicago-style hot dog for dinner, then Navy Pier or a rooftop bar for skyline views after dark.

Morning River cruise, the Riverwalk, Millennium Park
Midday The Art Institute of Chicago
Afternoon Willis Tower Skydeck (book ahead)
Evening Deep dish dinner, Navy Pier or a rooftop bar
“Book the river cruise and the Skydeck before you land, not the morning of. Both sell out on summer weekends, and I’ve watched a lot of disappointed faces at that dock.”
Day 02

Museum Campus & a Chicago Neighbourhood

Spend the morning at the Museum Campus, the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium all sit within walking distance of each other along the lakefront, pick one or two rather than trying all three in a morning. The 360 Chicago observation deck in the Hancock building, less busy than the Willis Tower Skydeck, is a good alternative view if you skipped it on day one.

Spend the afternoon in Wicker Park or West Loop, independent boutiques and live music venues in the former, some of the city’s best restaurants in the latter. End the second evening with dinner in whichever neighbourhood you chose, and a walk along North Avenue Beach or the Lakefront Trail if the weather’s on your side.

Morning Museum Campus (Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium)
Afternoon Wicker Park or West Loop
Evening Dinner, then the lakefront if weather allows

Getting around across both days

Downtown Chicago is compact and walkable, and the L train covers longer hops out to Wicker Park or West Loop efficiently. A car works against you here, parking downtown runs $40-60 a day and traffic makes transit the faster option on most routes.

If you only have time for one thing each day

Day one, make it the river cruise, it’s the single best value orientation to the city and sets up everything else you see. Day two, make it the Art Institute or the Museum Campus, both reward slowing down rather than rushing through.

That’s everything I’ve got.

A note before you plan around this: prices, opening hours, booking requirements and admission details in this guide were correct at the time of writing, but venues change these often and sometimes without notice. Always check directly with the attraction or its official website before you travel or build a schedule around a specific time or price.

Before travelling to any destination featured on this site, please also check your government’s latest travel advice, as safety situations, entry requirements and travel warnings can change.
