2 Day Cape Town Itinerary

Two full days, split so you’re not backtracking, with the mountain and the island on day one and the Cape Winelands on day two.

Two days in Cape Town is enough to properly cover the city’s iconic sights, and still get out to the Winelands for a proper taste of the surrounding countryside. Here’s how I’d split it, day by day.

Day 01

Table Mountain & Robben Island

Start early at Table Mountain, weather-dependent so build in flexibility, then take the ferry to Robben Island in the afternoon for the guided tour of the former prison. Both require advance booking.

Finish the day at the V&A Waterfront, dinner with a view over the harbour and the mountain behind it.

Morning Table Mountain cable car
Afternoon Robben Island ferry and guided tour
Evening Dinner at the V&A Waterfront
“Book Table Mountain for the earliest slot you can get, genuinely. Mornings tend to have clearer skies and shorter queues, and it leaves the rest of the day free for Robben Island.”
Day 02

The Cape Winelands

Take a day trip to Stellenbosch or Franschhoek, both roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Cape Town, for wine tastings against a backdrop of mountains and vineyards. Book a tour or rent a car, both towns are easy to explore on foot once you arrive.

Stellenbosch offers the most historic town centre, while Franschhoek leans into fine dining alongside the wine, worth choosing based on which appeals more.

Morning Travel to Stellenbosch or Franschhoek
Afternoon Wine tastings, a Winelands lunch
Evening Return to Cape Town

Getting around across both days

The V&A Waterfront and city centre are genuinely walkable on day one, the rest of day one and all of day two require a car, taxi or organised tour. A rental car works well for the Winelands if you’re comfortable driving on the left.

If you only have time for one thing each day

Day one, make it Robben Island, genuinely the single most significant site in the city. Day two, make it Stellenbosch, a proper contrast to the city’s pace and one of South Africa’s most celebrated wine regions.

That’s everything I’ve got.

A note before you plan around this: prices, opening hours, booking requirements and admission details in this guide were correct at the time of writing, but venues change these often and sometimes without notice. Always check directly with the attraction or its official website before you travel or build a schedule around a specific time or price.
