24 Hours in Chicago
One day, the essential downtown sights, hour by hour, built around the river and the skyline.
Twenty-four hours in Chicago is enough to properly anchor a first visit, this order builds the day around a few efficient anchor points, the river, the park, the skyline, rather than scattering across a city this size. Here’s the full plan, hour by hour.
Breakfast in the Loop
Start with breakfast downtown, Wildberry Pancakes on Wabash is a local favourite if you want something worth the calories before a long day of walking. The Loop, Chicago’s central business district, is where most of today’s stops sit anyway.
A Chicago Architecture river cruise
A 45 to 90-minute boat tour along the Chicago River is the single best orientation to the city, docents point out the Wrigley Building, the Tribune Tower, and dozens of other landmarks while explaining how the skyline actually came together. Book ahead, morning slots sell out fastest in summer.
The Riverwalk and Millennium Park
Walk the Riverwalk toward Millennium Park, Cloud Gate, known locally as The Bean, is the obligatory photo stop, its mirrored surface reflecting the skyline back at you. The Jay Pritzker Pavilion and the Lurie Garden are both worth a slower look if you have the time.
Lunch and the Art Institute of Chicago
The Art Institute sits right next to Millennium Park, home to the largest Impressionist collection outside France alongside major works by Warhol and Picasso in the Modern Wing. Grab lunch nearby first, the museum alone can easily eat two hours if you let it.
Willis Tower Skydeck
Book ahead and go as early in your slot as you can, queues build fast, especially on weekends. The Ledge, glass floor balconies extending four feet out from the 103rd floor, is the reason most people brave the line, not for the faint of heart but worth it for the view straight down.
Deep dish and a Chicago dog
Work dinner around the two dishes Chicago is actually known for, deep dish pizza and a Chicago-style hot dog, no ketchup, that’s a hard rule here. West Loop and River North both have strong options if you want a proper sit-down meal rather than a quick stop.
Navy Pier or a rooftop for the skyline
Navy Pier’s Centennial Wheel gives sweeping lake and skyline views after dark, and free fireworks run Wednesday and Saturday nights through summer. If crowds aren’t your thing, a rooftop bar like the Signature Lounge on the 95th floor of the Hancock building does the same job over a cocktail instead.
That’s everything I’ve got.
