24 Hours in Santa Fe

A plaza that’s been the city’s beating heart since 1610, a museum devoted entirely to one of America’s most significant artists, and half a mile of galleries lining a single winding road, one proper day in the oldest state capital in the country.

Santa Fe packs an unusual amount into a single day, one of the oldest public spaces in America, a museum devoted to a single, genuinely significant artist, and an arts district worth an afternoon on its own. Here’s how I’d spend 24 hours here.

Morning

The Santa Fe Plaza

Start at the Santa Fe Plaza, the historic heart of the city since 1610, ringed by adobe buildings, the Palace of the Governors and a rotating market of Native American artisans selling jewellery under its portal. A genuinely atmospheric way to get oriented before the museums open.

“Book Georgia O’Keeffe Museum tickets ahead, genuinely. Advance tickets are strongly recommended and available 60 days out, and the museum’s small, intimate galleries mean walk-up visits aren’t always guaranteed.”
Afternoon

The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum

Head to the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, a short walk from the Plaza, home to the largest collection of O’Keeffe’s work in the world. Allow roughly an hour for the galleries, a proper introduction to one of the 20th century’s most significant American artists.

Evening

Canyon Road and Southwestern dinner

End the day wandering Canyon Road, a former acequia turned gallery district, over a hundred art galleries lining roughly half a mile of winding street. Finish with a proper Southwestern dinner, green chile widely a Santa Fe staple worth building the meal around.

Getting around

Downtown Santa Fe is genuinely walkable, the Plaza, the O’Keeffe Museum and Canyon Road all sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. A car only becomes necessary for anything outside the compact historic core.

If you only have time for one thing

Make it the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. It’s the single most significant cultural institution in the city, and walking through the galleries is a proper introduction to Santa Fe’s artistic identity before you’ve even reached Canyon Road.

That’s everything I’ve got.
