24 Hours in Athens

A 2,500-year-old temple that’s survived an explosion, an occupation and a marble heist, a neighbourhood of neoclassical alleyways, and a sandwich worth queuing for, one proper day in the birthplace of democracy.

Athens packs an unusual amount into a single day, one of the most significant archaeological sites on the planet, a neighbourhood built for getting lost in, and a food culture that rewards straying from the tourist strip. Here’s how I’d spend 24 hours here.

Morning

The Acropolis

Start at the Acropolis, arriving right at opening to beat both the heat and the crowds. The Parthenon, the Erechtheion with its Caryatid porch, and the Propylaea gateway are all worth the climb, and the site is genuinely best appreciated slowly rather than rushed. Book tickets online ahead, a timed entry slot is required and walk-up queues in peak season stretch for hours.

“Wear proper grippy shoes, genuinely. The marble underfoot is worn smooth by millennia of visitors, and it gets slippery fast, especially after rain.”
Late morning

The Acropolis Museum and Plaka

Head to the Acropolis Museum, a strikingly modern building at the foot of the hill, home to the original Caryatids and the surviving Parthenon friezes. Walk into Plaka afterward, the old town’s neoclassical alleyways and Anafiotika, a tiny Cycladic-style village tucked into the hillside, are worth a slow wander.

Afternoon

The Ancient Agora

Walk down to the Ancient Agora, the heart of civic life in classical Athens, where Socrates once taught and the Temple of Hephaestus still stands remarkably intact. Considerably quieter than the Acropolis, and included on the same combo ticket if you booked one.

Afternoon The Ancient Agora, the Temple of Hephaestus
Getting there A short walk from Plaka or Monastiraki
Evening

Dinner and a floodlit view

End the day with dinner at a Plaka rooftop taverna with a floodlit Parthenon view, genuinely one of the best ways to close out the day. A souvlaki from a proper local spot beforehand is worth trying too, cheap, quick and widely considered one of the city’s signature foods.

Getting around

Central Athens is genuinely walkable, most of the day’s sights sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. The metro is efficient for longer hops, and the Acropoli station sits just a five-minute walk from the main entrance.

If you only have time for one thing

Make it the Acropolis. It’s the single most significant site in the city, and standing beside the Parthenon is a proper introduction to Athens before you’ve even left the hill.

That’s everything I’ve got.

A note before you plan around this: prices, opening hours, booking requirements and admission details in this guide were correct at the time of writing, but venues change these often and sometimes without notice. Always check directly with the attraction or its official website before you travel or build a schedule around a specific time or price.

Before travelling to any destination featured on this site, please also check your government’s latest travel advice, as safety situations, entry requirements and travel warnings can change.
