24 Hours in Las Vegas

One day, the essential Strip experience, hour by hour, ending downtown where the city actually started.

Twenty-four hours in Las Vegas means picking the classics over the extras, this order gets you the Strip’s biggest sights plus a taste of old-school Fremont Street without doubling back on yourself. Here’s the full plan, hour by hour.

9:00am

The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign

Start at the southernmost point of the Strip for the classic photo, the iconic sign has been a required stop since 1959. Go early, it gets a genuine queue for photos later in the day, and there’s a small paid parking lot right beside it if you’re driving.

10:00am

Walk the south Strip

Head north on foot, past the Luxor’s pyramid, Excalibur’s castle towers, and the New York-New York facade, all free to admire from outside. The free monorail linking Mandalay Bay to Excalibur via Luxor covers this stretch too if your feet need the break.

11:30am

The Bellagio Fountains and Conservatory

Time your walk to catch a fountain show, they run every 30 minutes from midday on weekdays and every 15 on weekends and evenings, free and genuinely impressive. Step inside to the Bellagio Conservatory afterward, a free botanical garden that changes its entire display by season.

1:00pm

Lunch and the Venetian’s canals

Grab lunch somewhere along the Strip, then walk through the Venetian and Palazzo, indoor recreations of Venice complete with painted sky ceilings and a genuine gondola ride if you want to pay for one. It’s free to simply wander through and gawk at the detail.

3:00pm

The High Roller or a pool break

The High Roller, the world’s tallest observation wheel on the LINQ Promenade, gives 360-degree views over the whole Strip and the desert beyond. If the heat’s getting to you instead, most Strip hotels sell day passes to their pools, a genuinely good way to cool off mid-afternoon.

5:30pm

The STRAT Tower at golden hour

Head up the STRAT’s 350-metre observation tower for sweeping views over the Strip, the suburbs and the vast desert beyond, one of the best vantage points to appreciate how improbable this city is. Book tickets ahead, and if you want the rides at the top, they’re only for the seriously thrill-seeking.

7:30pm

Dinner on or off the Strip

Several celebrity chefs run restaurants right on the Strip if that’s part of the plan, or head to Chinatown, a short rideshare away, for considerably better value and excellent food away from the resort markup.

9:30pm

Fremont Street Experience

End the night downtown at Fremont Street, the original Las Vegas, home to old-school casinos like the Golden Nugget and the Viva Vision canopy, the world’s largest video screen, running light shows overhead all night. It’s free, walkable, and a different atmosphere entirely to the Strip’s polish.

That’s everything I’ve got.
