Cardiff on a Budget
A free castle courtyard, a free museum, a free walk along the bay, and a city that doesn’t really need you to spend much to see the best of it.
Cardiff is one of the more forgiving UK cities to visit on a budget, several of its best-known sights don’t charge a penny. Here’s how to keep the rest of the costs down without missing anything worthwhile.
The castle grounds, the museum and the bay walk are all free
The Public Square within Cardiff Castle grounds is free to enter, no ticket needed to see the Norman keep from outside or grab a coffee at the castle café. The National Museum Cardiff has no admission charge either, and walking the Cardiff Bay Barrage toward Penarth costs nothing at all.
Visit outside major rugby and event weekends for lower prices
Cardiff hosts regular international rugby matches and concerts at the Principality Stadium, and hotel prices climb considerably on those weekends. Checking the stadium’s fixture list before booking accommodation is worth the two minutes it takes.
Walk the centre, bus for Cardiff Bay
Central Cardiff is genuinely compact and flat, most of the main sights sit within a comfortable stroll of each other. A bus or water taxi is worth it for Cardiff Bay specifically, a short but proper distance from the centre.
Central Market beats a tourist-strip meal
Cardiff Central Market’s food stalls offer considerably better value than a sit-down restaurant right by the castle, and a Welsh cake from one of the stalls remains one of the better cheap eats in the city centre. Cardiff’s independent food scene runs strongly beyond the main tourist streets too, worth seeking out.
Consider staying just outside the centre
Hotels right in the city centre or by the castle sit at the top of the price range given the location. Areas a short bus ride out run noticeably cheaper while staying well connected to both the centre and Cardiff Bay.
That’s everything I’ve got.
